Alicia Eggert (b. 1981) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work gives material form to language and time, the powerful but invisible forces that shape our perception of reality. She derives her inspiration from physics and philosophy, and work often co-opts the methods and materials associated with commercial signage to communicate messages that inspire reflection and wonder. She has made flashing neon signs that illuminate the way light travels across spacetime, billboards that allow Forever to appear and disappear in the fog, and signs that reveal the relationship between reality and possibility. These sculptures have been installed on rooftops in Russia, on bridges in Amsterdam, and on uninhabited islands in Maine, beckoning people to ponder their place in the world and the role they play in it.
Alicia's work has been commissioned and exhibited by notable institutions nationally and internationally, including the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas, the CAFA Art Museum in Beijing, the Triennale Design Museum in Milan, the Corning Museum of Glass in New York, the Albuquerque Museum of Art and History in New Mexico, the Telfair Museums in Savannah, and many more. Recent solo exhibitions have been held at Liliana Bloch Gallery (Dallas, TX), Artspace (Raleigh, NC), and Galeria Fernando Santos (Porto, Portugal). Alicia is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including a TED Fellowship, a Long Now Foundation Fellowship, a Washington Award from the S&R Foundation, a Direct Artist Grant from the Harpo Foundation, an Artist Microgrant from the Nasher Sculpture Center, and an Individual Artist Fellowship from the Maine Arts Commission. She has been an artist in residence at Google Tilt Brush, Sculpture Space, True/False Film Festival, and the Tides Institute and Museum of Art. In 2020, she was added to the Fulbright Specialist Roster by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
Eggert’s work is in the collection of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum, New Holland Island (St. Petersburg, Russia), the Light Art Collection (Amsterdam, Netherlands), the City of Houston’s Civic Art Program, the HALL Arts Hotel, IBM, Capital One, and more. She is currently an Associate Professor of Studio Art at the University of North Texas. She is represented by Galeria Fernando Santos in Porto, Portugal, and Liliana Bloch Gallery in Dallas. She lives in Garland, Texas.
StatementMy work gives material form to language and time, those powerful but invisible forces that shape our perception of reality. As a conceptual artist, I have always gravitated toward language as a sculptural material. I like to think I sculpt words the way other artists sculpt clay or wood. My creative practice is motivated by an existential pursuit to understand the seemingly linear and finite nature of human life within an almost infinite universe. I draw my inspiration from physics and philosophy, but I use simple, everyday words as points of entry into concepts that feel beyond my intellectual grasp. I give those words tangible forms so people can experience them in real space and time, because I believe we understand an idea more fully if we can experience it physically.
Not only do I use language to express meaning, I also take advantage of the way meaning is embedded in a material, and the way different materials each have their own duration or lifespan. I explore the conditions of possibility afforded by a broad range of media, from cut flowers to carved stone, from flashing neon signs to interactive inflatable sculptures that require people to hold hands to bring the fabric to life. I often co-opt the styles and structures of commercial signage to communicate messages that inspire a sense of wonder or reflection, using language that I hope most people can understand. After quickly and effectively grabbing your attention, the rhythm of a flashing neon sign grounds you in the present and makes you more aware of time’s passing. The flowers wilt, the steel rusts, and the inflatable eventually returns to a crumpled pile of fabric on the ground. Light takes time to travel, so by the time it reaches your eyes everything you see is technically an image of the past.
My artistic practice has grown to focus on executing temporary public art projects that address today’s most pressing issues, such as climate change, reproductive rights, and gender equality. I use my work as a platform to provoke discussion about complex topics in ways that are accessible and inspirational, and push people to embrace the urgency of “now.” I install my sculptures in environments that engage a broad public audience – on the steps of the Supreme Court, on building rooftops in Russia, on bridges in Amsterdam, and on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro – where they beckon us to ponder our place in the world and the role we play in it. These specific geographical, cultural and political landscapes provide context for the work’s message, allowing its meaning to change from place to place, and over time.
